Campaign for Science & Engineering
2013 Annual Lecture
In partnership with the Zoological Society of London
Professor Anne Glover CBE
Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the
'What's the use of Evidence?'
"How we do science has changed significantly over the last decades? At the beginning of the 20th century it was the norm that individuals pursued research confined to a single discipline. Now, we rely not only on teams working across disciplines but also across nations.
No individual member state in the EU can compete with North America and others in terms of research impact but if we look at European science together, then we do very well. Pan European collaboration has been accelerated by EU Framework funding and our challenge now is to make sure we continue to benefit from this possibility of collaboration across Europe and that we can find better ways of ensuring that the knowledge we produce is used to make smarter policies and better lives."
Professor Anne Glover joined the European Commission as Chief Scientific Adviser to the President in January 2012, and is the first person to hold this position.
In this role she advises the President on any aspect of science and technology, liaises with other science advisory bodies of the Commission, the Member States and beyond, coordinates science and technology foresight, and promotes the European culture of science to a wide audience.
Prior to her current appointment she was Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland from 2006-2011. Professor Glover currently holds a Personal Chair of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Aberdeen, and was awarded a CBE for services to Environmental Science in the Queen’s New Years Honours list 2009.
Kindly hosted by the Zoological Society of London.
