Description

This two-day program provides clinicians an opportuntiy to develop an understanding of the FEES proecedure for the evaluation and management of oropharyngeal dysphagia. Participants will receive two days of extensive hands-on training in passing and handling the endospcope safely and effectively. Participants will pass the scope on average, 12-15 times during the class. This course is offered for 1.5 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Professional area)

Learnign Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, particpants will be able to:

  1. Identify anatomical structures that are visualized with endoscopy.
  2. Determine when to complete FEES vs. MBSS for the managemen of dypshagia.
  3. Differentiate normal from abnormal swallowing using endoscopy.
  4. Implement protocols and competencies for different patient populations and settings.
  5. List steps that are needed to create FEES programs.
  6. Determine anatomical abnormalities and understand basic interpretation of FEES exams.
  7. Perform at an introductory level, the passing and positioning of the endoscope.

The Instructor:

Beth Cormell, M.S., CCC-SLP is a practicing clinician who specializes in acute care medical Speech Language Pathology. She has been employed by UNC Rex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC. since 1995 and initiated the FEES program in 1997. She began teaching in 1998, and has been instrumental in training clinicians, and implementing new FEES programs throughout thecountryandinternationally. Shehastaught FEES courses for more than 20 years, and has presented short courses on FEES implementation at ASHA and NCSLHA. She has also taught webinars focusing on medical Speech Pathology. She has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 26 years after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
