Dr. Jack Collins will lecture on Did Adam and Eve Really Exist? Who They Were and Why You Should Care. When it comes to the question of our origins, the Christian story allows room for difference on such matters as how long ago; but it depends on a unified and supernatural origin of humankind, and an actual Adam and Eve, who, at the headwaters, disobeyed God and brought sin and dysfunction into human experience.
Dr.Collins is Professor of Old Testament at Covenant Theological Seminary in St Louis, Missouri. He was a teen-aged herpetologist, and went to MIT for his S.B. and S.M. (Computer Science and Systems Engineering, 1978), to Faith Lutheran Seminary for his M.Div. (1985), and to the University of Liverpool for his Ph.D. (Hebrew linguistics, 1989). He has been a research engineer, a church-planter, and, since 1993, a teacher. His early work focused on the grammar of Hebrew and Greek, but he has branched out into studies in science and faith, in how the New Testament uses the Old, and in Biblical theology. He was Old Testament Chairman for the English Standard Version of the Bible, and Old Testament Editor for the English Standard Version Study Bible. He is the author of The God of Miracles: An exegetical examination of God’s action in the world (Crossway, 2000); Science and Faith: Friends or Foes? (Crossway, 2003); Genesis 1-4: A linguistic, literary, and theological commentary (P&R, 2006); Did Adam and Eve Really Exist?: Who They Were and Why You Should Care (Crossway, 2011). He and his wife have been married since 1979, and have a daughter and a son.
