Description

Learn how to carve the traditional acanthus leaf that has been around for centuries (you know... that scrolling leaf that you seen everywhere). This class is open to both beginner and experienced woodcarvers. We will start with the fundamentals – carving in the correct grain direction, tool sharpening, safety (never cut toward any body parts), and other basic carving techniques. After doing a small project to help you become familiar with the carving process, we will dive right into drawing and carving the traditional acanthus leaf. I'll will walk you through the step-by-step process to complete a carved acanthus leaf in two days!

Tools and materials:

Fishtail-shaped gouges are preferred, but straight gouges work also. If you have more carving tools, please bring them. I will bring extra tools also, and if you ask nicely, I might loan them to you.

6mm V-chisel (60° angle)
#3, 6mm

Mallet - 1 to 1.5 lb. (optional)
Fingerless bicycle or exercise gloves (optional)


Cost and materials: $325 each - 1 piece of basswood each for practice and one cut out basswood acanthus leaf blank.
