You are cordially invited to attend the History and Heritage of the Pass of the North Conference and the Annual General Meeting of CARTA, the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trail Association, to be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, in the Foundation Room in the historic Mills Building in downtown El Paso. Highlights of the program include presentations on heritage tourism planning and efforts to promote the Camino Real in El Paso County by Mr. Gary Williams and Mr. Bernie Sargent; an overview by Dr. George Torok regarding the history of the Camino Real in far West Texas; and an engaging talk by Dr. John Kessell about the international tensions between the United States and Spain in the early Nineteenth Century in the form of a paper titled “Not So Fast Mr. Jefferson: How a Mexican Priest and the Ghost of Bernardo de Miera y Pacheco Saved Texas and New Mexico for Spain.”
Registration opens at 8:00 AM in the Foundation Room, conference sessions begin at 9:00 AM, and will conclude at 4:00 PM. Lunch will be catered. A special recognition event at Keystone Heritage Park will follow the conference.
