Description

Launch of Carrie Seidman’s book, FACEing Mental Illness. Come to Bookstore1Sarasota, 12 South Palm Avenue, to meet this extraordinary, award-winning journalist who has become such an integral part of our community through her work with the Herald Tribune where she covers both the arts and mental health issues.

FACEing Mental Illness: The Art of Acceptance is a collection of the stories and artwork produced for Seidman’s ongoing fellowship project of the same name, which is aimed at changing cultural attitudes about mental illness and eliminating the stigma of a mental health diagnosis. Profiles of individuals in recovery from mental illness are accompanied by the self-portraits they created to explore their feelings about their challenges and others’ reactions to them. Each self portrait is accompanied by a photograph of the artist and an explanation, in his or her own words, of the thoughts that went producing to their artwork.

Carrie Seidman is a career journalist who has worked for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and the Albuquerque Journal and Albuquerque Tribune. Since 2010, she has been a staff writer for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune specializing in mental health and the arts. Seidman is a 2016-2017 fellow of the Carter Center for Mental Health Journalism and in 2016 received the national Mental Health America Media Award for her series, “The S Word: The Stigma of Schizophrenia.” Her writing has garnered awards from state and national journalism organizations, including the Gold Medal for Public Service from the Florida Society of News Editors in 2015. She is the single mother of one son with a mental health diagnosis and lives in Sarasota.
