Event Details

You are cordially invited to attend a briefing on the Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program by Dr. Carrera and I. The Carrera Program at Union Public Schools (UPS) is a partnership with the Community Service Council, George Kaiser Family Foundation, Tulsa Area United Way, and UPS.

The purpose of this briefing is not to solicit funds. Rather, Dr. Carrera and I will speak about how this cost-effective program works for challenged and troubled children, describe the collaboration between Union and Carrera, discuss why Carrera kids will succeed, and emphasize that long-term sustainability will require community support through many partnerships.

The Carrera Program understands that academic instruction alone is insufficient to help low socio-economic students fully develop and thrive through high school and college graduation. Our program believes that when young people see realistic possibilities of success in their future, they reduce risky behaviors on their own. Accordingly, our role, along with UPS, parents, and the community, is to illuminate a pathway to success for young people and to ignite their desire to succeed.

Data collected on this program at Union has been extremely promising. Early analysis indicates that the Carrera Program’s alignment within the Union culture is deepening and advancing the social, emotional, and academic supports critical for developing students’ competency and desire to succeed. According to the University of Oklahoma (OU) and Oklahoma State University (OSU), more teens ages 18 and 19 in OK gave birth in 2009 than entered the OU or OSU that fall semester as freshman. The Carrera programis one of only four programs whose evaluation has successfully documented declines in these numbers of teenage pregnancy.

We are headed for success with the promising young people we serve at Union. We are determined to improve Oklahoma’s ranking as having the 9th highest teen pregnancy rate and 4th highest teen birth rate in the country [1]. Each child born to a teen in the state of Oklahoma costs taxpayers $25,029 annually[2], which grows to $375,835 over 15 years. An investment in our program will deliver powerful dividends.

Thank you,
