Description

We have reached capacity for this event. You may, however, join a waitlist for cancellations.

Tahoe Donner’s Trails Department, the Friends of Tahoe Donner Trails club, and the Truckee Donner Land Trust invite you on an interpretive guided hike in the magnificent Lower Carpenter Valley.

Just over the ridge from Tahoe Donner’s Crabtree Canyon, but long hidden from public view, Carpenter Valley offers grand scenery, lush meadows carpeted by wildflowers, and the chance to see wildlife in their natural environs.

This hike will feature commentary on the valley’s ecology and history, detail the ways in which Tahoe Donner is working with the Land Trust to provide access to the valley, and highlight the tremendous recreational opportunities the Tahoe Donner community will enjoy once Carpenter Valley is fully open to the public.

For now, however, the only way to visit this extraordinary place is through docent led hikes like this one exclusively for Tahoe Donner members and their guests.

Hike Details

About 5 miles on mostly flat dirt roads.

Arrive Early

Please Arrive Early: The hike starts at 9:00, but you will want to give yourself plenty of time to drive Carpenter Valley Road and to find parking. You should plan to turn off Alder Creek Road and start down Carpenter Valley Road at around 8:30.

Driving Directions and Map

From downtown Truckee: Take 89 North toward Sierraville and turn left onto Alder Creek Road. Past the intersection with Schussing, take your first right turn onto Carpenter Valley Road, a dirt road with USFS signage.

From Tahoe Donner: Follow Alder Creek Road toward Highway 89. Just past the Tahoe Donner campground, turn left at Carpenter Valley Road, a dirt road with USFS signage.

Follow Carpenter Valley Road approximately 2.25 miles and park off to the sides out of the roadway near the locked gate. (See the notes on parking below.) This is a dirt road, but it is in good condition and driveable for most vehicles.

Parking: 5 Points

1. Parking near the locked gate is extremely limited.

2. Parking at the beginning of Carpenter Valley Road is ample. We would appreciate hikers being willing to carpool from there. A Land Trust docent will be organizing carpools in that parking area.

3. Park only on the LEFT side of the road.

4. When parking it is imperative that you leave room for large emergency vehicles to pass. If you have even the slightest doubt about whether you have left enough room for emergency vehicles, move your car.

5. We are concerned about fire potential. Before leaving your parked car, look carefully around your vehicle to make sure that you are not parking near or upon any dry grasses or any other easily combustible materials. If you are, move your car.
