ABOUT THE ARTISTS

The Lacewings are an acoustic duo drawing from deep roots of womens folk music from Europe and North America. Katherine Parent is a resident artist and activist at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, and completing a PhD in History at Luther Seminary, studying the history of Lutherans and race in the Midwest. Sarah Larsson studies folk music from Eastern Europe, performs in The Nightingale Trio, and is a 2018 recipient of the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative grant, and 2019 recipient of the State Arts Board Folk & Traditional Arts grant. The duo imagines themselves in old shoes: folk music interwoven with stories of women working, learning together, and making a life through art. This is the pair’s 4th year hosting Carols & Cocoa, in collaboration with Aida Shahghasemi.

Nanilo is a new women’s folk trio composed of Sarah Larsson, Sarina Partridge, and Alia Jeraj. Singing the rich harmonies of Jewish and Slavic folk music from Eastern Europe and women’s songs from Western India, the trio draws from their family roots to explore the journeys songs have made across borders and time. Singing entirely in the songs’ original languages, including Yiddish, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Gujarati, and more, the trio sings with the tight harmonies of a family band. Sarina Partridge is a touring performer and instructor with Village Harmony/Northern Harmony, and sings with Mila Vocal Ensemble. Alia Jeraj is a vocal music graduate of the University of Minnesota, and researches Gujarati folk music as an independent performer.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operation Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
