Carolina Chocolate Drops
Saturday, August 31, 2013 from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM (EDT)
Carolina Chocolate Drops, has proudly reclaimed the African-American string band tradition. While old-time music is often associated with white Appalachia, the Chocolate Drops reveal the celebratory, interconnected currents running through blues, country and bluegrass, bringing brash, youthful energy to music rooted in the red soil of the southern Piedmont.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops concert's, The New York Times declared, were “an end-to-end display of excellence… They dip into styles of Southern black music from the 1920s and ’30s—string-band music, jug-band music, fife and drum, early jazz—and beam their curiosity outward. They make short work of their instructive mission and spend their energy on things that require it: flatfoot dancing, jug playing, shouting.”
