Event description
This workshop provides a space where our characters can matter and we get to care about them.

About this Event

Often when we improvise, our character gets used - used to move the plot forward, to get a chuckle from the back row, to make the other player look good. This can feel like success, but when we play using, we miss a chance to play with. After all, if you're really looking for help to get somewhere, wouldn't you rather it came from a friend?

This workshop provides a space where our characters can matter and we get to care about them. We'll pay attention to the difference between caring and indulgence and take our creations on a journey of discovery, one that's sure to include surprises! You may put your character through the wringer... but you'll never abandon them.

Inspired by over a decade of improvised mask work and the show format Worst Enemies, Alex Fradera will be reminding us that in the best improv we allow these goofy, uptight, strange figures into our hearts.

About your instructor:

Alex has been improvising for over 13 years and has taught the art form in person in Germany, Poland, Finland, France, Slovenia, the UAE, USA, and across the UK. Alex works with a number of UK-based and international improvisation groups, including the eclectic German/international supergroup Der Kaktus and performance art parodists The Dreaming. He has developed original improvised formats that have played internationally, including mask formats, chamber pieces, middle eastern metafiction, and shows inspired by the writings of Tom Stoppard and Haruki Murukami. He was an Artistic Director of the Würzburg Festival 2016-18, and is a member of Ohana, a European network of improvisers. He is co-founder of Open Heart Theatre in Newcastle, UK, and now lives in Scotland.
