Event description
Become equipped to come alongside children and teens in their grief journey as they find hope, strength, and healing. Childcare provided.

About this event

"A child old enough to love is old enough to grieve."

Tragically…

“Nine in 10 children will experience the death of a family member or close friend during their time in school.” (EVERMORE, 2021)

When a child or teen experiences the death of a loved one, life as they know it is turned upside down.

At Companions on a Journey (COJ) and the Lakota Local School District, we believe that no child or teen should grieve alone, which is why we partner together to offer critical grief support services to your children.

Often grief is reported to disrupt a child’s sleeping and eating patterns; their ability to concentrate; form healthy thought patterns; express emotions; and continue to develop attachments to others. Left unaddressed, this can lead to risky behaviors, drops in grades, depression, self-isolation, and other traumatic grief reactions (The National Traumatic Stress Network).

The good news?

Grief support, which is sensitive to cultural background and focuses on social skills, relaxation, expression, coping skills, and identifying triggers is an effective intervention for lowering poor outcomes for bereaved students (Ferow, 2019).

You can make a difference

This free educational night is open to anyone who supports a child or teen attending a school in the Lakota Local School District (parents, grandparents, relatives, guardians, school staff, and other caring adults).

We approach grief holistically through deep listening and supportive presence. Come learn about how you can support and advocate for the important kids in your life who are grieving the death of a loved one.

Topics:

  • Grief and Developmental Stages
  • How to Discuss a Death with Children and Teens
  • Identifying Traumatic Grief Reactions
  • Helpful Coping Tools and Resources
  • Creating a Grief-Sensitive Environment for Children/Teens
  • Balancing Your Own Grief While Caring for Children/Teens

Organizer Companions on a Journey

Organizer of Caring for Grieving Children & Teens

Companions on a Journey provides ongoing support for the bereaved - one child, one teen, one adult, one family at a time, surrounding them with HOPE, STRENGTH and HEALING as they create their new life balance.

We believe you're never too old or too young to benefit from the compassionate, healing support of community.  We offer a variety of monthly of school and community based support groups to meet each person wherever they are on their grief journey; creating a power of connection which helps each person know they are not alone.

While we are sheltering at home during this global pandemic, we still believe this connection is essential for health and healing to occur.  We are creating new groups as needed, which will begin  meeting by utilizing online resources until we are once again allowed to meet in person.
