Event description

Description

This hands-on workshop will focus on the use of open source tools in caring for digitised and born digital AV collections.

Attendees will learn about the basic structures of video files, and how to use tools like mediainfo to view technical metadata that allows you to understand what kinds of file are in your possession. Guidance
will be given in how to gain enough knowledge to be able to interact with AV digitisation vendors. This includes requesting specifications, addressing quality control issues, and checking if the files provided
by a vendor match your agreed specifications.

There will be an introduction to using tools such as FFmpeg and QCTools in order to gain a more advanced understanding of your files, and how to perform Quality Control and to correct potential errors and
create access copies of your preservation files. We will also touch on file format migration and normalisation, and how you can use open source tools to verify the losslessness/integrity of the process.

Consideration will be given to how these various methods reflect some of the requirements of the Core Trust Seal, and how you can improve your compliance with this certification process by demonstrating your
use of open source tools.

Workshop will be hands-on and is open to information professionals with little to no background in preservation.
