Transform your job into a successful and satisfying career. Networking is critical for finding jobs, while continuous learning is critical for advancement. What should you do after you have a job, and what are the best ways to advance in your career? Many of the skills required for finding that first job need to be maintained and upgraded for career success. In addition, continuing to learn new skills and information will be indispensable throughout your professional life.

There are multiple forms of networking, including via alumni and professors from college, as well as via LinkedIn and other networking and social media sites. Don’t think of networking as “selling” or “marketing” yourself, but rather as making connections via teachers, colleagues, friends, and family. With the right attitude, networking can be fun and fulfilling, not a chore. Finding the best job (whether your first or fifth) requires gathering information, and networking makes this much easier and more efficient. Informational interviews and how to behave and respond during job interviews are important, as are resumes and portfolios, and a basic knowledge of how ATS systems work. A mentor can help guide and advise you in both a job search and career advancement. Networking is also an essential part of career advancement; the people in your network will help to keep you informed about advances in the field, new tools and resources, the most influential groups, and will also help you find colleagues for collaboration or professional activities.

Many of you will work with a recruiting firm or for an agency at some point in your career, and we’ll provide both tips and things to avoid. Participating and volunteering for professional organizations can be effective, including reviewing conference and journal submissions. How can you get the most out of national conferences, and why should you consider presenting at local meetings and conferences (even if you do not have a research background)? There will be time for discussion and sharing of experiences and tips that may help others.

Within 10 years you’ll be expected to do things that are not being taught today, and we’ll discuss the best ways to learn new skills and areas of specialization. Lessons from cognitive and educational psychology on how to optimize learning provide a methodology, while the thousands of free online courses and resources provide content.

All participants will receive (electronically) a 65-page paper prepared by the presenter that includes links to over 70 articles, 30 courses, 16 recruiting firms, and multiple books and organizations (“Developing a Successful Career: How to find a Job, Continue to Learn, and Advance in your Career”).

Presenter Biography

Dr. Demetrios Karis has been researching, designing, and evaluating consumer products and services for over 30 years at Verizon, GTE, Grumman Aircraft Systems, and the University of Illinois. He helped design GTE Airfone and several speech-based systems, and then for ten years led the SuperPages.com user interface group at GTE Labs, where he established a program for developing a comprehensive understanding of the user experience. He has managed multiple groups of up to 15 people and has interviewed and hired scores of full and part-time employees and contractors.

Demetrios has presented at local and international conferences, holds multiple patents, and has published several dozen papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Demetrios received a B.A. in Psychology from Swarthmore College, a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Cornell University, and was awarded an NIMH postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois. He is now an independent consultant and has worked as a contractor at Google, Fidelity, as well as several small consulting firms. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Bentley University and teaches courses in both the User Experience Certificate program and the graduate program in Human Factors in Information Design.
