Core purpose
Following the success of the first ‘Care Under Pressure’ symposium in November 2017, we are hosting a symposium on interdisciplinary approaches to simulation in health and social care education and training incorporating patient feedback and service user knowledge.
Participation is free but participants must register via Eventbrite.
Keynote speakers
The symposium will feature talks from international leaders in the fields of Simulation Research, Drama, Medical Education and Social Work Education.

0830 Registration & coffee
0900 Opening remarks: Dr Paul Murphy (Drama, QUB) to make a few opening remarks about the aim of symposium in relation to the super-objective of developing a hybrid model across health and social care.
0915 Session 1: Dr Joe Duffy (Social Work, QUB) will go into more detail about the aim and scope of the symposium and the broader programme of collaborative research. This panel will include students from Drama, Medicine and Social Work who have engaged in the joint teaching collaboration.
10.15 Refreshments (tea/coffee etc.)
1045 Session 2: Prof. Brian Singleton (Drama, TCD) keynote. Brian will talk about the process of professional training actor training in his capacity as a leading academic in the field of Drama and founder and academic director of The Lir (Ireland's National Academy of Dramatic Art)
11.45 Session 2: Panel with Dr Gerry Gormley, Mr Ian Walsh and colleagues in Medical Education at QUB.
1245 Lunch
1345 Session 3: Dr. Nancy McNaughton (INESRA) keynote. Nancy will talk about developments in the field of simulation research.
14.45 Session 4: Prof. Tim Dornan (QUB) keynote. Tim will talk about the latest findings from his research in medical education.
15.45 Session 5: Dr Joe Duffy to round up the days activities focused on set objectives/assignment

0900 Opening remarks: Dr Paul Murphy introduces the schedule of events for the day
0915 Session 1: performance of a series of short, scenario-based simulations involving staff from QUB and RVH, students, simulated patients and service users. The simulations involve high fidelity representations of emotionally challenging scenarios that are used to train students in Medicine and Social Work.
1015 Refreshments (tea/coffee etc.)
10.45 Session 2: Dr Alex Mermikides (Drama, Guildhall) keynote: Alex will discuss a practical project she is currently working on with colleagues in the simulation department of a nursing degree programme in London.
11:45 Session 3: Presentation with Dr Nicola Weatherup (RVH) and colleagues from Emergency Medicine followed by presentation with Dr Janine Stockdale (QUB) and colleagues from Nursing and Midwifery
12:45 Lunch
13.45 Mark Kelly will perform ‘STOP’ prior to session 4
Session 4: Panel with Dr Stephen Herron (QUB and Southern Trust) and colleagues in colleagues in Mental Health, and Dr Gavin Davidson and colleagues from Social Work, QUB.
14.45 Brenda Brady will read poetry by Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley and an extract from Brian Friel’s Translations prior to grand rounds/large-group discussion.
