About this event

As we celebrate Moments of CARE and our 75th anniversary, CARE and Spike Mendelsohn, Restauranteur and CARE Chef Advocate, will host a virtual cook-off as he uses items in the original CARE Package to create an inventive and delicious meal. Special guests will join to share messages of solidarity throughout the program.

CARE was founded 75 years ago to address the hunger crisis that gripped Europe at the end of World War II. CARE gave Americans a way to send CARE Packages of life-saving food and supplies to those in need. It was the very first moment of CARE.

Today, COVID-19 has triggered another hunger pandemic and caused an alarming spike in the number of malnourished people, who are already at high risk of serious illness and death from the virus. Prior to COVID-19, the number of malnourished people worldwide had already been rising steadily for several years.

CARE responded at the outset of the pandemic by mobilizing the largest response in our organization’s history and re-introducing the CARE Package to send relief worldwide and, for the first time, here in the United States.

But what was in those original CARE Packages? Potted meat. Dried prunes. Beverage powders. Evaporated milk. Dehydrated eggs. Flour. Staples to live on, food that saved lives, but few would claim this could make a gourmet meal. Until now.

Celebrities and chefs will join this celebration of the original CARE Package. We share a mutual commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to healthy, nutritious food.
