Event description

Description

The Carceral State Project 2018-19 Symposium is the first major undertaking hosted by the University of Michigan Carceral State Project. The Symposium series will feature six roundtable discussions that interrogate the meaning of the carceral state—broadly defined—and its intersection with criminalization, policing, containment, surveillance, activism, and community building. Each symposium will feature five speakers who will address the theme and discuss their own experiences and understandings of the carceral state. The chair will then moderate a discussion among the audience and the speakers, soliciting questions, comments, and ideas prompted by the remarks. Each event will be structured around a major theme or question related to the carceral state, with the intent that the discussions build on one another and produce a base of scholarly and campus-community dialogue around carcerality.
