Carbon offset validation and verification workshops
ASU Sustainability Practices hosts Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative and Urban Offsets, Inc for carbon offset validation and verification trainings.
Attendees will learn to assess the value of the carbon stored in urban trees by performing validation and verification assessments. Carbon offset generation and management is a burgeoning new industry in the field of sustainability operations; it is a service that is expected to be in high demand in the coming years from governments and other large institutions striving for climate neutrality.

Who should attend?
Trainings are technically-oriented & designed to benefit: municipal professionals, nonprofit staff and volunteers, business managers and entrepreneurs, as well as students, academics and university administrators--anybody who works with, or aspires to work with tree care, emissions management, and sustainability goal planning and implementation.
What will be covered?
The training consists of an in-class section covering the fundamentals of offset projects and a hands-on tree inventory and health/maintenance assessment portion using the Urban Offsets tree-monitoring app to gather the data required for validation and verification.

Speaker information:
Tani Colbert-Sangree, Program Coordinator, Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative, Duke University
Tani Colbert-Sangree received a BA in Environmental Studies from Oberlin College and a certificate in GHG Management through the GHG Management Institute, before founding his GHG consulting business, Tomorrow’s Climate Solutions. Now at Duke University, Tani manages the offset strategy of the Duke Carbon Offset Initiative to achieve carbon neutrality at Duke by 2024, and develops guidance materials and protocols to improve offset project implementation globally.
Shawn Gagné, Founder and CEO, Urban Offsets Inc.
Shawn holds an M.Sc in environmental science from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada. Prior to founding Urban Offsets, Shawn worked as a consulting scientist helping cities across North and South America maintain their natural resources. Urban Offsets develops local carbon projects using community tree planting programs--more than 11,000 trees have been planted using funding from UO since 2016. Urban Offsets also helped develop and test the Peer Validation standard being used by the DCOI protocol.
