We are pleased to announce that the new California Air Resources Board (CARB) Southern California Headquarters in Riverside, California is open, and facility tours are now available.
This is an opportunity to visit one of the world’s most advanced vehicle emissions testing and research facilities dedicated to cleaning California’s air.
CARB’s new 402,000 square-foot headquarters is the largest building designed to be Zero-Net Energy (ZNE) in the United States and has received numerous environmental and architectural awards. It also contains the largest collection of climate and air quality themed public works of art in the world.
The general tour of this acclaimed facility includes:
- A tour of the light and heavy-duty testing labs where vehicles and engines of all sizes from weedwhackers and motorcycles to passenger cars and big rigs are tested to ensure they comply with California’s stringent emissions standards. The tour will include 7 light and medium-duty emission test cells; 3 heavy-duty test cells; and 2 motorcycle test cells.
- A visit to the state-of-the-art chemistry lab that specializes in analyzing motor vehicle exhaust emissions, evaporative emissions and transportation fuels.
- A tour of the art collection featuring 6 major artworks dedicated to climate and air quality.
- A visit to the 250-seat public auditorium where the California Air Resources Board meets in Southern California.

Transportation/ Parking
- There are about 20 guest parking spaces in the front of the building off Iowa Ave. Carpooling is highly encouraged. Please let us know if you are planning to use public transportation.
** Note: ** When guests arrive, they will proceed to the front entrance and sign in with the front desk. Tours start from the lobby.
Meet the Speakers
Marisa Keckeisen
Associate Designer, ZGF Architects
Marisa Keckeisen brings seven years of experience across a variety of complex project types, including new construction and tenant improvements for higher education, civic, corporate, and healthcare facilities.
Marisa’s detail-oriented and collaborative approach, combined with her knowledge of numerous advanced architectural software programs, makes her an asset to design teams in the exploration of project opportunities and challenges in determining ideal design solutions for each client.
Paul Erickson
Principal / Building Performance Practice Group Leader, Affiliated Engineers, Inc. (AEI)
As AEI’s Building Performance Practice Leader, Paul Erickson, LEED AP BD+C, manages the firm’s sustainable design services and champions high performance design on projects around the country. As a principal and project manager on higher ed, laboratory and other project types, he is dedicated to integrated design, decarbonization, leveraging performance simulation tools to inform design, and ensuring that design solutions can be operated and maintained in the long term.
Through his leadership and collaboration efforts, Paul has been able to influence the design of numerous all-electric and net zero energy projects, as well as nearly 20 million square feet of certified LEED projects.
