This experiential programme leverages the power of storytelling skills to create deep change, using a set of action methods coaching and facilitation activities.

Storytelling based coaching activities help people perform more imaginatively and develop new perspectives, mapping innovation pathways and broadening viewpoints to build systemic awareness. Getting ‘inside’ a story or situation helps unlock unconscious solutions, enabling groups to take full ownership of participative problem solving and planning processes.

What’s involved?

The programme runs over five sessions, with an additional pre-session for people who don’t currently use coaching / mentoring skills.

The sessions will run from 5pm-8.30pm on the following dates:


In addition to the whole group sessions participants join in action learning sets, pair with a learning buddy and share their practice notes with the group.

All skills are developed through a participation/pause point/practice model. Key concepts are also outlined in a set of e-learning modules, which include video content and written material.

Who is it suitable for?

These skills are useful for anyone supporting or leading people in a professional capacity, including leaders, managers, facilitators and trainers.

How can I use these skills in my job on a day-to-day level?

All activities can be used informally as part of existing conversations, for example in team meetings, 1:1 planning and review processes, vision and strategy planning sessions, progress reporting and briefing, developmental / conflict resolution conversations.

How can these approaches help with formal group sessions?

Storytelling coaching activities are a great way to engage people in more formal workshop settings and as part of L&D programmes, Town Hall events and similar. As part of the programme we demonstrate how to embed activities in session design to create deeper engagement, participation and ownership.

The Content

(Pre-Session) Introduction to Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching agreements, coaching/mentoring continuum, levels of listening, questioning and feedback, GROW, accountability

Session 1 — Storytelling Skills

Audience awareness, core behaviours, shaping your message, bare bones technique, personalisation, show not tell, body and voice, practicing performance, feedback skills, concretisation

Session 2 — Foundations of Leadership

Sociometry and systemic thinking, developing roles, presence, positive framing, cultural agility, working with resistance, brain states and growth mindset

Session 3 — Surfacing Information

Continuum lines, mapping, viewpoint/role reversal, developing empathy through doubling

Session 4 — Tackling Change

Old story/new story, behaviour/polarity continuums, three chairs, future projection, the inner expert

Session 5 — Secrets of Success

Planning and session design, the power of warm up, maintaining presence, boundaries and group safety, applying the approaches on the ground

Course Cost:

Suggested donation between £50 - £200 depending on income
