Workshop Descriptions

Corequisite Remediation: The Most Powerful Way to Increase Completion and Equity Among Incoming Students

Friday, February 9th 10:00-3:00

Under the new AB705 legislation, by Fall 2019 community colleges will need to allow the vast majority of students to enroll directly in transfer-level English and math, and support for underprepared students will need to be provided concurrently instead of in traditional developmental classes.

Nationally and in California, corequisite models are producing dramatic gains in completion of transferable college-level courses, and a similar policy is being implemented in the CSU.

These day-long workshops will provide an introduction to corequisite remediation, with data, hands-on activities, and guidance from faculty already implementing these approaches in California community colleges.

Get a jump start on developing your own local corequisite models for Fall 2019.

The workshops will focus on developing, scaling, and teaching corequisite remediation, including:

  • An overview of the latest research

  • Nuts and bolts information about developing and teaching corequisite courses, with time for Q&A with early implementer community college faculty

  • Time for faculty to work together on an action plan for developing and/or scaling corequisite remediation, with support from facilitators

  • Hands-on activities on classroom pedagogy and techniques for supporting students’ work in transfer-level courses

Corequisite Remediation in English Workshop: Friday, February 9th 10:00-3:00 in Multi-Use Building (MUB) 140

Corequisite Remediation in Math Workshop: Friday, February 9th 10:00-3:00 in Visual Arts Building (VARTS) 115

Statistics Workshop

Saturday, February 10th 9:00-4:00

This workshop will deepen statistical understanding and introduce best practices in pedagogy related to the teaching of introductory statistics at the community college level. Please note that this workshop does not repeat content from previous workshops.

Dr. Roxy Peck, a pioneer and international leader in the field of statistics education, will be our lead facilitator.

We will focus on key topics in a typical introductory statistics course outline, sharing a variety of activities and assessments to implement in your classes. We will also provide opportunities for participants to design and share additional activities.

At the end of the day, we will have a Q&A session with Dr. Peck and other community college faculty facilitators.

Statistics Workshop: Saturday, February 10th 9:00-4:00 in Multi-Use Building (MUB) 140
