Description

The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) is pleased to offer a series of in-person training events for K-12 Canvas users delivered by Canvas trainers.

Enrolled Act 57 was passed during the 2017 legislative session requiring the WDE to provide districts with a Learning Management System (LMS). The WDE in collaboration with the University of Wyoming, 5 community colleges selected Canvas as the single LMS to create a unified K-20 experience for students and teachers across the state. Utilizing this statewide system, allows students and teachers to take advantage of the following benefits:

  • Consistent support of in-class and online instructional practices through the use of Canvas in conjunction with Google and other classroom technology.
  • Provide additional educational opportunities to equip our students for success at all levels and to prepare for future educational endeavours.

These training sessions will introduce participants to Canvas as well as provide in-depth training for those more experienced users. Whether you are a faculty member, Canvas Admin, Principal, Technical Support, or an Instructional Designer, there are sessions tailored to all audiences!

Objectives:

  1. Provide a hands-on overview of Canvas components.
  2. Get started building and organizing content in Canvas.
  3. Discover how Canvas supports teaching and learning.

The following Canvas trainings will be offered:

AM Sessions:

  • Getting Started in Canvas
  • Digging Deeper - Beyond the Basics
  • Everything You Need to Know to be a Canvas Admin

PM Sessions:

  • Digging Deeper - Beyond the Basics
  • Modeling Canvas for Faculty
  • Course Design and Troubleshooting

A special THANK YOU to Weston County School District #7 for hosting this training!

FAQs

What is Canvas:

Canvas is a Learning Management System, or LMS. It is a collaborative platform used to manage online learning—including reporting, resource-sharing, grading, feedback, discussions, content creation, outcomes and tasks. An LMS simplifies teaching and learning by connecting all the digital tools teachers use in one easy place.

Session Descriptions:

Getting Started in Canvas:

Introduces participants to the Canvas environment. Attendees will explore navigation of the platform, communication tools as well as the basics of content creation and grading.

Target Audience: New (to Canvas) Faculty

Digging Deeper - Beyond the Basics:

A more advanced look at Canvas for faculty. Participants will dig into course design, content organization, assessment tools, and the ways course data can be used to drive instructional practices.

Target Audience: Experienced (Canvas) Faculty, Curriculum Staff, Instructional Designers

Everything You Need to Know to be a Canvas Admin:

Provides Canvas Administrators with an overview of underlying structure, settings, and capabilities of the Learning Management System. Admins will learn the fundamentals of organizing Canvas, managing users, customizing account settings, extracting data, and managing shared resources.

Target Audience: Canvas Admins, Student/Faculty Support

Modeling Canvas for Faculty:

First, discover the basics of getting around in Canvas, the capabilities of the platform, and best practices for adoption. Then a dive into Staff permissions, and how they can be used to support instructional staff and institutional goals. Lastly, an exploration of the ways that school administrators can use Canvas with their faculty, and staff through PLCs, professional development and more.

Target Audience: Principals, School-Based Leadership, Department/Program Heads, Curriculum Staff

Course Design and Troubleshooting:

Successful faculty and student Canvas support is best achieved through the partnership between Tier 1 Canvas support and institutional staff. Discussions about instructional design, customizing content and troubleshooting course creation are well served in person with faculty as they begin to use Canvas. Participants will learn about best practices, common challenges and tips for success.

Target Audience: Student/Faculty Support, Instructional Design, Canvas Admins
