Structural Pruning Basics

Saturday, April 6
Time: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Location: Cubberley Community Center, 400 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto

Session 1: Structural Pruning
10:00-12:30 pm

Would you like to learn how to prune young trees in your yard? Pruning trees during their first few years, is critical to long-term health and vitality. In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn the art, science, and skill of young tree pruning with Canopy’s Program Director, Michael Hawkins, and other expert arborists. No prior experience necessary; we welcome all skill levels. Focus will be on pruning young shade trees, but concepts can be transferred to more mature trees and some fruit trees.

Session 2: Hands-on Practice
12:30-2:00 pm

Gain additional pruning practice with on-the-spot coaching from skilled arborists. This practice will prepare you to volunteer with Canopy as a Pruning Leader to help maintain hundreds of recently planted trees in schools, parks, and public spaces in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, and surrounding areas. By joining our team, you can provide an invaluable service to the community, laying the groundwork for a healthy, vibrant urban forest that will benefit the community for decades to come. Additional instruction will be available at follow up tree care workdays.

Attend Session 1, 2, or both. To support the cost of this workshop, there is a suggested donation of $15. If you do not wish to donate, select the discounted free ticket when registering with Eventbrite.

About Canopy's Community Forestry School

A growing body of research confirms that trees are key to our wellbeing and quality of life, effective learning, public health, and environmental justice. We invite you to learn about trees and urban forestry, as well as Canopy’s programs and the ways you can work with us side-by-side to remedy local inequities in tree canopy cover and access to urban nature.

Canopy’s Community Forestry School will dive into the fundamentals of urban forestry:

  • Selecting the right tree for the right place

  • Pruning young trees for structure and longevity

  • Recruiting residents to be stewards of their neighborhood trees

  • Educating youth to raise awareness of the important benefits of trees

  • Engaging community members to become citizen scientists through oak tree surveying

  • Advocating for tree-friendly policies, resources, and master plans that support the urban forest

Each workshop will include an in-depth, hands-on session, and will conclude with an optional training to equip you with skills to volunteer with Canopy.
