CGC 2017 DRAFT

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Training and Test (The American Kennel Club's most widely recognized standard for "good dog" evaluation. This is a preparatory course. Testing available by instructor; Intermediate Level Skill Level and Beyond; 5 week course with optional test week 6 for a fee)

Canine Good Citizen Training Course with Optional Additional Session for Test:

Five weekly lessons beginning September 20th, ending on October 18th, with optional additional test on session 6 ($20 fee for test not included in course). Dog must be friendly around or ignore other dogs and people in class. Dog should have intermediate level skills or beyond.

This is a test prep course. Each of the ten test items represents manners desirable in a pet dog. Dogs should have fundamental familiarity with each of these behaviors prior to starting class. In class, we will troubleshoot individual challenges, practice ways to strengthen performance, and help prepare you and your dog for the test.

Your practice between classes should focus primarily on the test behaviors that are most difficult for your dog but remember all the other behaviors too!

SUMMARY INFORMATION MODIFIED FROM AKC’S WEBSITE outlining the CGC Test:

1: ACCEPTING A FRIENDLY STRANGER: demonstrates the dog will allow a friendly stranger to approach it and speak to the handler in a natural, everyday situation.

2: SITTING POLITELY FOR PETTING: demonstrates the dog will allow a friendly stranger to touch it while it is out with its handler.

3: APPEARANCE AND GROOMING: This practical test demonstrates he dog will welcome being groomed and examined and will permit someone, such as a veterinarian, groomer or friend of the owner, to do so. It also demonstrates the owner’s care, concern and sense of responsibility.

4: OUT FOR A WALK (WALKING ON A LOOSE LEAD): demonstrates the handler is in control of the dog. The dog need not be perfectly aligned with the handler.

5: WALKING THROUGH A CROWD: demonstrates the dog can move about politely in pedestrian traffic and is under control in public places.

6: SIT AND DOWN ON COMMAND AND STAYING IN PLACE: demonstrates the dog has training, will respond to sit and down and will remain in the place cued by the handler (sit or down position, whichever the handler prefers).

7: COMING WHEN CALLED: demonstrates the dog will come when called from 10 feet away.

8: REACTION TO ANOTHER DOG: demonstrates the dog will behave politely around other dogs. Two handlers and their dogs approach each other from a distance of about 20 feet, stop, shake hands and exchange pleasantries, and continue on for about 10 feet. The dogs should show no more than casual interest in each other. Neither dog should go to the other dog or its handler.

9: REACTION TO DISTRACTION: demonstrates that the dog is confident when faced with common distracting situations. The evaluator will select and present two distractions.

10: SUPERVISED SEPARATION: demonstrates the dog can be left with a trusted person, if necessary, and will maintain training and good manners. The owner will go out of sight for three minutes. The dog does not have to stay in position but should not continually bark, whine, or pace unnecessarily, or show anything stronger than mild agitation or nervousness.
