We hope you will join us for a concert of celebration, reflection, beauty, and artistic discovery in the warm environment of St. Joseph Basilica. Warm your spirit and treat your ears to the sweet sound of children singing this holiday season when the internationally acclaimed Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir presents this year's Candlelight Concert.
The four top groups from the Performing Department of the Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir--Ancora, Concert Choir, Ecco and Ensemble--120 singers in all, will present a highly varied and excellent program under the direction of Andrew Brown, Eric Tuan, and Robert Geary.
We have a great program for you including some masterworks by Gustav Holst, Arvo Pärt, Thomas Tallis, Herbert Howells, Meredith Monk, Lajos Bardos and many others.
Additionally, in alignment with our goal of advancing the choral arts, we will hear brand new music. The Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir has received many awards for its performances of new music and it is exciting to see this part of our program finding new dimensions. In recent years our choirs have been able to perform and/or commission works from three of our alumni (Reed Criddle, Eric Tuan, Anne Hege) all of whom are published composers. We have also performed new music by alumni Maggie Ruenzel and Will Adams and by staff member Sue Bohlin, also a published composer. At the present time we have at least six members of Ecco and Ensemble who are actively composing and arranging.
At this Candlelight Concert, we will hear the premiere of '46' based on the poem of the same name by e. e. cummings and composed by our student Bryn Lawson. We will also hear a performance of Things by student Kyle McDonald which was given its premiere on October 22, 2016 at St. Joseph's in Alameda in our joint concert with the Bratislava Boys Choir.
Best wishes to you as we celebrate the season with music!
