As a part of our Civic Engagment week, Impact Hub Seattle presents a Town Hall-style forum with mayoral candidate Mike McGinn, and six City Council candidates as they discuss the nuances and answer questions from audience members about three unique and growing segments of Seattle's economy: the growing tech and small business sector, ideas on how to handle the flourishing "sharing economy" in Seattle, and their overall vision for Seattle in regards to the future of social business and large-growth social entrepreneurship in our great Evergreen city.
- Mayor Mike McGinn (6.30-7pm, moderated by Ignite Seattle moderator and Geekwire/Seattle Times writer Monica Guzman)
- City Council candidates Richard Conlin, Albert Shen, Sally Bagshaw, and Sam Bellomio (7.15-8.30pm, moderated by SVP Seattle Board Member, Forbes blogger, and Managing Editor of the NW Vietnamese News Julie Pham)
WHY: In the last two years alone, Seattle has seen unprecedented growth in these three sectors: we have seen multiple companies move their startups from the Bay Area to Seattle, we have seen three major companies - Sidecar, Lyft, and AirBnB - move their services to Seattle with astonishing growth rates, we have seen the number of coworking spaces double in Seattle, and we have seen the continued growth of entrepreneurs merging the growing tech sector with their desire to create mission-driven businesses. Not only does Impact Hub Seattle have a membership community of over 500 Seattlelites, between our two building partners - the Bainbridge Graduate Institute and Social Venture Partners - we have a community of over 5,000 informed, involved, and actionable Seattelites. These questions are fiercely important and directly applicable to this community. Impact Hub Seattle is a nonpartisan organization. This is meant to be a policy forum directed at addressing these key issues to our specific voting community.
CAN I ASK QUESTIONS? Yes! This forum is curated by you. Our moderators will be there to manage questions and watch time, but you will be submitting questions to the mayor and council candidates via our volunteers in the back of the event space. Remember, we are focused on the three above topics, so please try and fit your question into these concerns!
