Event description

It is with regret that we have to inform you that last night Vanderbilt University announced the cancellation of all non-athletic public events until the end of April. This means that we have cancelled all events in the "There Is No Flaw In You: A Sexuality Education in Ministry" series.

We do plan to reschedule the series in the near future, and will notify you once the new dates are set.

Thank you for your understanding, and your partnership in this work and ministry.

There is No Flaw in You (Song of Songs 4:7) will emphasize that sexuality is a normal and divine part of the human experience. This series is designed for anyone who wants to develop skills, tools, and confidence for addressing issues of sexuality as part of their ministry (including education, activism, organizing, art, chaplaincy, and more). Each workshop will equip religious leaders to counter the shame and fear-based approaches that commonly shape discussions of sexuality in ministry and faith contexts.

Using engaged, embodied, learner-centered practices, participants will:

  • Learn new frameworks and evidence-based approaches for understanding human sexuality;

  • Strengthen skills and confidence for talking about human sexuality

  • Practice reflection and education tools that can be translated directly into your ministry and inform your faith journey

While this series will focus on scriptures from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, folks of all faiths are welcome. We will learn together and from each other as we put new knowledge and tools into conversation with our faith traditions and personal experiences/values.

Accessibility: Vanderbilt Divinity School is wheelchair accessible and has single stall, all-gender restrooms near the training room. The room has both natural and artificial light (not fluorescents). Participants are encouraged to not wear scents. We will do our best to accommodate any other accessibility needs; please indicate your needs on the registration form.

March 9—Ministry and Sex: Moving Beyond Fear and Seeing Sexuality Everywhere

This session will:

  • Introduce the concept of Holistic Sexuality through Biblical perspectives
  • Develop new tools for understanding how human sexuality shows up throughout ministry
  • Strengthen your vision for how you want to shape your ministry in response to human sexuality

March 16—Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: Body Basics

This session will equip you with:

  • Updated understandings of our sexual and reproductive anatomy
  • Updated understandings of “biological” sex and gender
  • Increased skills and comfort for talking about bodies, sex, and gender

April 6—Sacred Boundaries: Tools for Showing Up Well for Yourself and Others

This session will equip you with tools for:

  • Clarifying your own values,
  • Better understanding when to share personal information
  • Effectively responding to difficult questions or comments
  • Navigating trauma and experiences of violence
  • Healing ourselves and supporting the healing of others

Image description: Large white post-it attached to wall. The handwriting of several different people can be seen in blues, pinks, and greens, at various angles. The sentences seem to be responses to a question. Answers are along the lines of “Learn Healthy Boundaries for talking about sex/sexuality with kids/ you” and “To be available, trusted (in an earned manner) to create spaces free from shame and fear in regard to student’s bodies and sexuality.”
