Can We Talk?
Overview
Can We Talk?
InvitationThe polarizing “Us vs Them” thinking found in, and exacerbated by, social media bubbles is perhaps one of the greatest challenges of modern times. You are cordially invited to attend the first of our planned series of events intended to address polarizing issues, foster greater openness, empathy, and informed public discourse.
Topic one: Alberta Separation
The topic of Alberta separation evokes passionate opinions and strong feelings. We invite people of goodwill to join us in an environment where all voices can be heard and respected, regardless of viewpoint. Whether you support, oppose, or are undecided about Alberta’s future, your perspective is valued.
IntroductionWhile social media platforms offer unprecedented opportunities for connection and expression, they also contribute to the formation of "bubbles"—digital echo chambers where users are often exposed only to viewpoints and content that align with their own beliefs.
Effects of Social Media Bubbles
· Polarization: When users are exposed only to like-minded opinions, their views may become more extreme, contributing to societal polarization.
· Misinformation: Bubbles can facilitate the spread of false or misleading information, as users may not be exposed to fact-checks or counterarguments.
· Reduced Empathy: Limited exposure to diverse perspectives can reduce empathy and understanding between groups with different backgrounds or beliefs.
· Social Fragmentation: The division into separate bubbles can undermine public discourse and hinder efforts to find common ground on important social issues.
Inside our social bubbles, it is easy to think that we are right, (all our friends agree). We ask rhetorically “How can they believe that? They must be crazy.” Join us for the opportunity to literally ask “Why do you believe that?”
When we listen and talk respectfully, we have opportunities to search for effective counterarguments, and if our arguments fail, to ask why? Maybe our arguments are weak and need to be improved. Maybe there are errors in our reasoning. Maybe we need to rethink and perhaps even modify our opinion.
What to Expect
· Qualified speakers presenting arguments for and against Alberta Separation
· Opportunities to share your opinion and listen to others
· Open and respectful dialogue
(Upon entering, attendees will be required to sign that they understand and agree to this.)
