Event description

Description

Please join us for an intensive workshop that will bring together Republican-leaning and Democratic-leaning citizens for a day of structured conversations, with a focus on listening and reflecting rather than debating and persuading.

Goals:

  • To better understand the experiences and beliefs of those on the other side of the political divide.

  • To seek out areas of common ground in addition to acknowledging and respecting differences.

  • To gain insights that might help to heal the increasing polarization in our community and the nation.

Who can come? Anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of, and connection with, people whose political beliefs differ from their own.

Logistics: There are two ways to join a Red/Blue Workshop: as a participant or as an observer. Participants will engage in small- and large-group discussions throughout the day with individuals of both the same and different political persuasions. We ask for the purposes of this workshop that participants identify as “red” (leaning Republican and/or conservative) or “blue” (leaning Democratic and/or progressive). We will strive for an equal balance of red and blue participants. Observers will not participate in the discussions directly but will have the opportunity to watch and listen throughout the day, as well as to join the participants for conversations during lunch and break times. (A note about food: coffee and snacks will be available throughout the day, and freewill donations will be gratefully accepted. We ask that all participants and observers bring a brown-bag lunch with them. A refrigerator and microwave are available on-site.)

About Better Angels:

Launched in 2016, Better Angels is a bipartisan citizen’s movement to unify our divided nation. By bringing red and blue Americans together into a working alliance, we’re building new ways to talk to one another, participate together in public life, and influence the direction of the nation.

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory…will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

– Abraham Lincoln, 1861
