Event description

Join us for an event unlike anything you have experienced before—High Fidelity presents a conversation with WIRED's Senior Editor Peter Rubin, and Philip Rosedale, founder and CEO of High Fidelity in virtual reality. Peter recently published Future Presence: How Virtual Reality Is Changing Human Connection, Intimacy, and the Limits of Ordinary Life.

Many argue that mobile smartphones and social media have made us less-connected to our fellow human beings. VR has the potential to course-correct the isolating nature of many of today's technology and the opportunity to make us more connected and even more human.

This will be an interactive talk where the audience will have the opportunity to ask both Peter and Philip questions.

You must be on the guest list to attend. Attend from where ever you are, or join us in our VR Studio in San Francisco. VR Studio tickets are limited.

To register and attend the event, you must have an account with High Fidelity. If you do not have an account with High Fidelity, you can create a free account here.

How to Attend the Event in High Fidelity's Open VR Platform

Step 1: Create a free High Fidelity account (Skip if you have this already)

Head to https://highfidelity.com/users/signup to get started. This takes less than 30 seconds, and will be required as we will need your High Fidelity username to confirm you on the event guest list.

Step 2: Check to see if your device can support High Fidelity

Please check your device of choice and see if it is compatible with High Fidelity:

  • PC running Windows 7 64 bit or later, 8GB+ RAM, i5, Nvidia GTX 970 / AMD R9 290
  • Mac running Mountain Lion (10.8) later, 8GB+ RAM, i5, Nvidia GTX 970 / AMD R9 290
  • 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04, 8GB+ RAM, i5, Nvidia GTX 970

Step 3: Download, install, & run High Fidelity

Visit Download High Fidelity, run the installation process and open High Fidelity by clicking on the “High Fidelity Interface” icon newly created on your Desktop.

Step 4: Log in & go through our tutorial

For an optimal event experience, we recommend going through the tutorial to familiarize yourself with how to use the platform. Once you open the Interface, please click “File” in your menu and click “Login/Sign Up” option. Please use your High Fidelity account you created in Step 1.

Once you login, go through our tutorial to learn how to move, grab objects, pull up your tablet menu, and traverse various virtual worlds. Did we mention avatar customization?

Step 5: Attend the event in a space named “Zaru”

At the end of your tutorial, you’ll walk through a portal named “Start.” Once you arrive at Start, please look for a portal that has “Zaru” written on top and walk through it. Another option is for you to look around and ask a greeter how to get to Zaru to attend the event.

Philip Rosedale

In 1995, Philip Rosedale created an innovative Internet video conferencing product ("FreeVue"), which was later acquired by RealNetworks, where in 1996 he went on to become Vice President and CTO. In 1999, Rosedale left RealNetworks, founded Linden Lab and built a virtual civilization called Second Life, creating an open-ended, Internet-connected virtual world. Following Second Life, Rosedale worked on several projects related to distributed work and computing. Excited by innovations in these areas and the proliferation of new VR-enabling devices, he re-entered the world of VR in 2013, founding High Fidelity.
