Event description
Diverse teams will examine NYC Open Data and come up with new ways of visualizing the data and envisioning the future of NYC

About this Event

NYC has made open data available free for citizens to explore and use. In its raw format, the datasets consist of large amount of texts and numbers and are difficult for an average citizen to consume. Even after the datasets are transformed into charts and graphics, it may still require substantive training to understand and interpret the results. In a world that information consumption becomes more visual, we wonder: “How might we make the NYC Open Data more accessible and useful by exploring new ways of visualizing the data?” For example, moving from 2D to 3D, to multi dimensional representations; from static to dynamic, moving through space and time; using artistic concepts of color, shape, size and orientation to show categories, patterns, correlations, outliers, and etc. The new ways of visualizing NYC open data may lead to more engaged conversations among citizens and result in a better way of living.

The event has two parts:

Part 1: On Sunday March 1, from 9am to 5pm, we will host a one day hackathon. inviting a diverse group of people to participate, including data scientists, engineers, architects, designers, artists, students, and local residents. Diverse teams will be formed to examine one or more datasets from NYC Open Data repository, to ask questions we don’t currently have answers to, to collaborate, to make connections, to synthesize, to come up with new ways of visualizing the data and to envision the future of NYC.

The day will start with an introductory discussion of data challenges and opportunities, followed by the hackathon and facilitated conversations around data. The day will conclude with team presentations and demos.

Part 2: The participants from the hackathon will be invited back to showcase their work and share what they learnt. Date and location TBD.
