Event description

Description

Are you looking for a Personal Safety Course for yourself or family member but you aren't looking to be a Black Belt? Are you hoping to go to school with general knowledge that can give you an advantage if your safety is at risk? We know that women’s self-defense courses can vary greatly so we’ve taken the most important information and turned it into a 4-hour workshop that will give you more than just the basics. Black Belts spend years training to build skill but if you don’t have that kind of time or getting a Black Belt isn’t what you’re looking for then this class is for you.

In our workshop, you will:

How to strike vulnerable targets for maximum affect

How to escape from ground assaults

How to handle and use non-lethal weapons like pepper sprays and stun guns

How to recognize Red Flags in potentially abusive relationships and friendships

How to recognize human trafficking lures in person and on the internet

How to report an assault and what you should know the law as it relates to self-defense

... and more.

We are collaboration of women with backgrounds in martial arts, non-lethal weapon training, survivor advocacy, and the law and together we have created an invaluable program that addresses multiple aspects of Personal Safety.

This 4-hour course will teach escapes from scenarios like rear chokes, hair grabs, multiple attackers, and more. Our ground component will teach escapes from scenarios like landing on your back, striking from the ground, and getting up quickly. Our legal and advocacy component will discuss the different types of restraining orders, the legal parameters of self-defense, how to report an assault, and how to get help after. Rounding out our class is the non-lethal weapon component that will teach how to use pepper sprays, stun guns, and striking tools including proper grips and the best targets to strike.

Overall, our class will cover some of the more difficult realities of self-defense and will give you or your daughter the knowledge that she needs to potentially stop an attack before it starts and to help her defend herself if it comes to it.

In order to create a comfortable environment for the discussion of difficult topics, this class is women-only. It is taught by an all-female team that includes a rape crisis advocate to assist with any topics that can be triggering.

Participants should wear comfortable clothing that keeps their arms and legs protected from rug burns. Each participant will receive a resource and training booklet and striking tool as a parting gift. We will provide short breaks throughout the class but meals are not provided.

We hope to see you here!

What is Out Of Harm's Way?

We are a collaboration of women with backgrounds in self-defense and advocacy. Our goal is to centralize resources and bring personal safety education to our communities. Find out more at www.outofharmswayca.com

Is there a minimum age requirement for the class?

Yes. We HIGHLY suggest your child be at least 14-15 years old since the topics we discuss are mature and can include mentions of rape, date rape, domestic abuse, and more. There is always a rape crisis counselor on site for support and assistance with resources.

What should I bring to the class?

Dress comfortably, you will be moving around. Shoes are not permitted on the carpet but feel free to use socks if you aren't comfortable bare foot.
