Inspired by his popular photography “InstaMeets,” the choreographer, director and social influencer Jacob Jonas hosts an intensive hands-on workshop for photographers to create visual content using stunning dance performances. Photographers will get a chance to collaborate with professional dancers and each other in this highly participatory workshop. The Annenberg Space for Photography is excited to partner with Union Station for our event! The management of this historic building has agreed to open its doors to our workshop participants, so they can draw inspiration from the gorgeous halls as well as the dancers performing within.
Overview of the Day
The first three hours will be the #CamerasandDancers event having the professional dance company (5-10) dancers and the influencers (5-10) collaborate to create content while the students participate and observe. At the end of the event, the dancers from the partnering dance company and the influencers will leave. Then Jacob Jonas and 2-3 of his dancers will stay to the end while I give the instruction and have the students shoot the three dancers. The workshop curriculum will be on how to shoot dance and how to use photography to market your brand using social media. We will then as a group walk through the space that is made available to shoot in as a small mini tour. Jacob will then partner the dancers and influencers together while the students decide who to follow. For the first hour it will be one on one collaboration with the dancers/influencers. From there, we will come up with group shots for the dancers while the photographers find their perspective. There is no shot list in an effort to make this event as spontaneous as possible.

Jacob Jonas is the Founder and Artistic Director of Jacob Jonas The Company. Jacob began his dance career at thirteen as a street performer on the Venice Beach Boardwalk. He continued his training by studying other forms of dance, leading him to his true passion – choreography. After being awarded National Performing Artist of 2012 with his partner, Jill Wilson, Jacob was provided with the opportunity to meet with Donald Byrd, Artistic Director for Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle, WA. What began as a one-hour meeting became a three-month choreography mentorship with Byrd, further developing Jacob’s vision as a choreographer and setting him on the path to founding his own dance company. In addition to choreography, Jacob has built his Instagram following to over 75k followers, becoming a social influencer. He connects with the community through his #CamerasandDancers events, which bring the mediums of dance and photography together to create content and build collaborative, long-lasting relationships.
