Tour Description

Tour Host: Natalie Ethier

A narrow strip of land west of Little Mountain and east of Shaughnessy, South Cambie is one of the smallest neighbourhoods in Vancouver. With the construction of the Canada Line the neighbourhood has recently undergone a transformation. In some areas enhanced sidewalks, landscaping, and street furniture have improved the pedestrian experience.

This walk will explore the streetscapes and alleys of the neighbourhood with a few key stops to highlight architectural and historical points of interest.  The walk will begin and end in Cambie Village, where participants will be invited to draw memory maps of the neighbourhood.

Special Instructions

This tour is wheelchair accessible.

Tour Host Bio

A geographer and advocate for pedestrian-scale development, Natalie Ethier is interested in the connections between urban form, perception, and experience of place, and how these influence movement through cities. With her project Pedestrian City she encourages people to share memory maps as a way to make connections between the places and interactions they experience in a neighbourhood; things they've noticed but maybe never put together in the same mental space.

Jane's Walk

Jane's Walk is held simultaneously in cities across Canada and other countries around the world. Inspired by Jane Jacob's and her belief that in order to know your city "you have to get out and walk," Jane's Walk is a simple idea. It is free, it connects people and builds communities by promoting urban literacy and citizen engagement.
