The congregation of Mother Emanuel AME Church invites the Charleston community to a free one-day camp for young people (ages 10-14) on June 23rd to celebrate multi-culturalism and pursue racial reconciliation by discussing stereotypes and other race-related issues; brainstorming ways to promote ethnic openness and experiencing different cultures through arts.
This interactive event is being held in conjunction with the Emanuel Commemoration Committee’s activities to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Emanuel 9 and the survivors.
Based on a curriculum developed at Coastal Carolina University, children will learn how to appreciate diversity and differences and how to promote multi-culturalism in their schools and communities. The College of Charleston's Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion and various artists from the community will help facilitate activities.
Lunch provided for youth attendees by Palmetto CAP.
Adults and community members are welcome to join the festivities and witness the artistic presentations in the Buist Academy Auditorium at 3:30pm.
Volunteers are needed from 8:30am-4:30pm to assist with registration, lunch and talent clusters. During the afternoon, the children will be divided into collaborative clusters and will create a presentation based on one of four talents (art, dance, choir, poetry and drama). Volunteers from the arts community are needed to facilitate these sessions. Please indicate interest by registering under the Volunteer ticket.
Registration required. Please register by June 16th in order to get lunch and a t-shirt. Registration (without a t-shirt) is available until June 20th. Because we need specific information from each participant, attendees must register as individuals even if they're coming as part of a group. Please indicate any organizational affiliations under the "Organization" category.
Please call 843-343-9049 or visit www.emanuelamechurch.org for more information.
