About this Event

Developed with beginner and intermediate calligraphers in mind, this 2-day workshop explores the lowercase and capital letters of Engrosser's Script / Copperplate Calligraphy. I will guide you stroke by stroke to uncover the beauty and harmony of this timeless art form. It is my goal to equip you with the tools to refine and critique your work so you can further develop your practice after the course.

Our workshop will be located in the historic center of Lexington, in a beautiful sun-filled and air-conditioned studio space with free onsite parking. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance nearby for our 1-hour lunch break. All supplies will be provided, along with wine and petit fours.

Included supplies: 1 wood oblique penholder, 3 nibs, ink, paper, pencil, eraser, & course handout.

About your instructor:

Master Penman Connie Chen (www.connie-chen.com) is the youngest Master Penman in the world, and the only one recognized for her skills in Engrosser’s Script, Ornamental Penmanship, and Offhand Flourishing by both Senior Master Penman William A. Lilly and Master Penman John DeCollibus. Connie apprenticed to Senior Master Penman William A. Lilly, who earned a Gold Seal Certificate at the Zanerian College, the top award given by America’s leading school of penmanship and engrossing. With more than 20 years of experience in English and Chinese calligraphy, Connie creates art that transcends the boundaries of geography, culture, and time. Reviews from past and current students:

“Not going to lie I was completely FLOORED by your tailored and super attentive feedback on my homework (in a good way)!!! It must’ve taken you a while to go through all of our submissions but it just goes to show how much heart and energy you devote to your students. I used to think I didn’t need much feedback since I’ve been mostly learning independently, but it has been so so helpful to have a 2nd, more experienced eye on my work and your advice from what I can see so far has been very valuable!!”

“I’m 1/3 through the Engrosser’s Course and already see a marked improvement in my letters. Connie’s lessons are succinct, but thorough, clearly detailing critical elements of the primary letterforms that have helped me create more beautiful, balanced, and historically accurate letters. However, the portion of this course that has been invaluable is Connie’s direct feedback on each letter. Her trained eye picks up on small details that I may overlook, but those details have a profound effect on the overall balance and beauty of the letter. I recommend this course, even for non-beginners who desire to train their eye and bring their Engrosser’s to the next level.”
