Event Description/Theme:

Some have speculated that the Upper Paleolithic Venus of Willendorf sculpture with its exaggerated features was primarily intended to be experienced tactilely rather than solely as a visual object. We are inviting regional artists to submit a 2-d or 3-d piece of work which can be experienced and enjoyed through the sense of touch. This is the third event of sensory exploration produced by the NFBO-PCC. Our first event focused on the experience of sound through music. The second event added the taste of gourmet vegan desserts with sound. For our third sensational night, we are excited to add the sense of touch through tactile art.

Submission Details:

-Artists may submit up to 4 digital images of a single piece of work to be juried for inclusion in the show.

-Submissions must be tactile in some way i.e. bas relief, engraved, sculpture, textured painting. All media welcome and must be durable enough to withstand repeated gentle handling throughout the hours of the event.

About the NFBO-PCC

The members of the Portland Central Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) enjoy connecting with our community as we help our members achieve their goals and “Live the Lives We Want.” We know that blindness is not the characteristic that defines us. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams.

Your Tactile Art donation makes this and future fundraising efforts possible, empowering us to influence our community and ensure bright futures for people experiencing blindness/visual impairment.

100% of all proceeds from “Night of 3 Senses” help fund activities to provide positive outreach and education about blindness, support local members’ state NFB conventions and special events such as service projects in which we partner with Portland area organizations. Funds raised at this event are allocated as follows: 10% - Terry Stroschein Scholarship Fund for blind college students preparing for careers in STEM occupations or counseling, 25% - Blind Entrepreneur Fund to assist with business start-up, business-related equipment, or similar needs, 65% supports our annual state convention as well as legislative seminar's and other special events in our community.

Financial assistance available for blind artists, to inquire please email-nfbpdxcentral@gmail.com
