Description

After five years of drought, who knew that water year 2017 would end up as one of the wettest years with multiple flood events for California? In this presentation, Michael Anderson, California's State Climatologist, will look back at the water year and examine the climate signals that facilitated the string of weather events that made water year 2017. Key elements of these weather events were the atmospheric rivers that made landfall over California, 49 of them from October through April. Michael will discuss these atmospheric rivers and look at the new science and observations in place for this fantastic year. Finally, he will talk about the forecasts, coordination, and response measures that helped mitigate the damages.
