Description

The Alameda County Conservation Partnership is pleased to host the 2018 California Tiger Salamnder Biology and Management Workshop, May 16th and 17th. Join instructors Peter Trenham, PhD and Chris Searcy, PhD for an opportunity to learn about the biology, ecology, habitat and management of the California tiger salamander, and for hands-on experience learning proper field surveying methods and techniques.

This workshop is comprised of one classroom session and one field session per attendee. All 30 registrants will attend the classroom session on May 16th from 8am-3:30pm. The field sessions will be split into two groups of 15 each. The field sessions are: 4:30 to 7:30 PM on May 16 or 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM on May 17.

When purchasing your ticket, select the ticket which states the field session you would like to attend. Registrants attend ONE of the two field sessions.

Additional Information:

  • The classroom portion of the workshop will be held at Rober Livermore Community Center.

  • Light breakfast and lunch included with registration for the classroom portion.


Classroom topics include:

  • Basics of amphibian biology and conservation

  • Evolutionary relationships among tiger salamanders

  • How to identify CTS eggs, larvae, and adults

  • Life cycle, demography, and population dynamics

  • Predators and prey

  • Habitats and ecology

  • Movements, populations, metapopulations, and landscapes

  • Threats

  • Strategies for conservation and recovery


Field Session topics:

  • Training with field equipment use and cleaning

  • Seining and dip-netting for CTS larvae

  • Appropriate care and handling of captured CTS

  • Approaches for detecting CTS in upland habitats

  • Understanding the importance of gophers and ground squirrels
