2011 California River Awards

Friday, October 28th 6 to 9 pm

The Golden Gate Club, Presidio of San Francisco

135 Fisher Loop, San Francisco, CA  94129

The 2011 California River Awards will be a festive and unforgettable evening celebrating a number of California's most dedicated river heroes.  Along with delectable food, terrific wine and great music, it’s a wonderful opportunity to socialize with old and new friends and support FOR’s ongoing efforts to protect California’s rivers.  A live and silent auction will tempt you with many enticing items: outdoor adventures, fine wines and dining, art, camping equipment and more.

We are pleased to announce that a very special “Sponsors Only” event will precede the Awards this year – a private reception and presentation on the founding of the Tuolumne River Trust by the women and men who did it.

Our 2011 Award Recipients are:

The Mark Dubois Award: the Founders of the Tuolumne River Trust

In 1981 a group of dedicated river activists founded the Tuolumne River Trust (TRT).  Since then, TRT has been working successfully to protect and revive the Tuolumne River watershed, from the Sierra to the Sea.  What began as a small dam fighting organization has grown into a watershed-wide movement that is restoring habitat, advocating for increased flows and water conservation, working to remove fish barriers, and revitalizing riverside communities by educating the public and building broad community support.

The Peter H. Behr Award : Representative Sam Farr

Representing California's Salinas Valley, the “salad bowl” of the nation, Rep. Sam Farr has been a true friend of rivers...and oceans... and wildlands.  In 2002, he successfully sponsored and passed legislation that added 54,000 acres to the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness areas, including sections of the Little Sur, Arroyo Seco  and Nacimientorivers.  He helped secure the permanent protection of another 7,200 acres of parks and open space when the Fort Ord military base was closed in 1994. Rep. Farr is a member of the House Oceans Caucus, authored legislation establishing the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and has lobbied for strict federal organic food standards.  Currently he's sponsoring legislation in Congress to protect more than 90 miles of Wild & Scenic Rivers on public lands in the Big Sur region.
