Event description

Description

A leader on addressing climate change, California has been steadfast in pursuing policies to reduce gas emissions and invest in clean energy. The state has largely focused on climate initiatives at home, yet its successful environmental policies have influenced nationwide legislation like the Clean Power Act. Climate and energy goals have also attracted the attention of business leaders, environmental commissioners, and officials around the globe. With Trump taking a back seat in the climate change discussion, California has positioned itself as a leader on the international stage.

After Washington rejected the Paris Agreement, California, under the leadership of Governor Jerry Brown, has led an alliance of US cities to fulfill global climate goals. The state has clearly taken the lead in working to stay below the climate threshold of two degrees Celsius with Brown creating legislation for California to become carbon-free by 2045. The state has also formed a coalition with Mexico to reduce gas emissions and enforce methane standards. When it comes to the carbon market, the state's cap-and-trade program has served as a prototype for the Chinese government, and California became the first state to sign a memorandum with China to fight greenhouse emissions.

How will California continue to lead on climate?

Join us as we host Ashley Conrad-Saydah, Deputy Secretary for Climate Policy at California Environmental Protection Agency, and Timothy O’Connor, Senior Director of California Energy Program at Environmental Defense Fund, in a discussion on California and the policies it has pursued to curb climate change, focus on renewable energy sources, and work together with other nations to support and advance climate initiatives.
