Swords are dramatic, exciting and powerful. In this workshop, we learn and drill sword dancing for ATS® and Tribal formats. For non-ATS® dancers, this workshop will give you plenty of ideas for creating unique, improvised sword work for solo, duets, trios and more. You will learn which slow and fast moves are ‘sword friendly’, and which ones are not. You learn how to modify classic ATS® slow and fast moves while staying true to improvisational cues and transitions. With an emphasis on communication between dancers, the technical sword lesson will include working in duets and group work using ATS®-based moves and combos perfect for sword dancing. In addition to learning how to use your sword as a dance prop, you will also learn how to keep that sword on your head in spins and turns. Workshop participants need to bring their own dance swords (or a yard stick if you don’t yet have sword). This workshop is suitable for belly dancers of all styles, no prior ATS® training is required.

HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT SILVERTON

Silverton is a quaint and historic Victorian mining town located 50 miles north of Durango in the heart of Colorado's majestic San Juan Mountains. The town is a National Historic Landmark, and is surrounded by public lands, so opportunities for outdoor recreation including hiking, mountain biking, camping, jeeping, etc. abound.  September is a wonderful time of year to view the fall colors.  More information on Silverton area activities can be found on the Silverton Chamber of Commerce website: www.silvertoncolorado.org.

Please note that Silverton sits an elevation of 9,318 feet above sea level.  While altitude sickness is not a problem for most visitors, you should be aware of its symptoms which include headaches, dizziness and shortness of breath.  One of the best ways to avoid altitude sickness is to drink lots of water before you arrive and while you are here.  Allowing a day or two to acclimate, eating light meals, reducing your alcohol intake and getting plenty of rest will also help.

The weather in Colorado can be unpredictable. It can be very warm and sunny in September, or we may experience snow. Nighttime temperatures can vary by as much as 30 degrees from daytime highs. Your best bet is to be prepared for anything Mother Nature may dish out! Bring everything from tank tops to warmer layers and flip flops to closed toe shoes.

LODGING & LOGISTICS
Two airports are roughly equidistant from Silverton: the Durango La Plata County Airport (DRO) and the Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which are 62.3 and 60.25 miles from Silverton respectively.  Airport shuttles can be arranged through Mountainside Concierge: www.mountainsideconcierge.com.

With the exception of the Friday night lecture, all workshops, vending and the hafla will take place at Kendall Mountain Community Center in the Grand Ballroom, which is a beautiful timber framed space with hardwoods floors, ample natural light and fantastic mountain views.  KMCC is a short walk from Silverton’s downtown area, or if you prefer to drive, the facility also has a large lot with ample free parking. For more information about KMCC visit http://www.sanjuancountycolorado.us/kendall-mnt.html

We have arranged special lodging prices for workshop participants at two of Silverton's finest historic hotels.  The Teller House (www.tellerhouse.com) is offering rooms for $79/night and the Grand Imperial Hotel (www.grandimperialhotel.com) is offering 20% off their regular room rates.  Mention Caldera to receive these special rates. Private vacation homes can also be rented through Silverton Property Management: www.silvertonpropertymanagement.com.
