All About DESMOS: Next-Level Instruction That Can Instantly Be Used!

Desmos is an instructional tool that is instantly effective in math, science and STEM classrooms. It is used by tens of thousands of STEM teachers who freely share the results of their efforts and those of their students. Desmos is more than an online graphing calculator; Desmos has built a library of ready-made, self-directed student learning experiences. Come to this workshop with a laptop or tablet, and leave with the skills and digital tools to change the way you teach math, science and STEM classes. Help students love math, and experience all the curiosity, beauty, and sense STEM instruction has to offer.

Desmos built the best-in-class HTML5 graphing calculator that millions of students around the world use for free every day. That calculator earns stellar reviews in app stores and on Twitter. Desmos also creates activities to help students use this powerful tool to experience all the curiosity, beauty, and sense that math has to offer. Desmos wants to help every student to love learning math. Come experience Desmos and play with its features!

Instructors:

Matt Vaudrey is the Educational Technology Coach for Bonita Unified School District who has taught 8th grade, seniors, and most math classes between. Recently, his school tagged him to pilot a 1:1 iPad program for intervention students. With no curriculum, Matt sought ways to make math meaningful for his students using free technologies available.

Matt blogs at MrVaudrey.com, connects with educators across the world on Twitter, and presents at conferences throughout California. Taking any opportunity to "talk shop" with other teachers, his Mullet Ratio is used (and improved) by teachers around the world.

Objectives:

  • Experience instruction that attracts, inspires, motivates, and engages students as they apply practical skills to real world tasks.
  • Explore and consider high-interest STEM application Desmos.
  • Learn to create real-world, standards-aligned experiences that draw students into standards-aligned class content.
  • Engage in professional learning that promotes technology-supported practices of 21st Century classrooms.
  • Rediscover your passion for teaching!

Region 4, System of District and School Support

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 requires each state to establish a statewide system of intensive and sustained support and improvement for local education agencies and schools receiving Title I funding to increase opportunities for all students to meet state academic content and achievement standards. As a result, the Regional System of District and School Support (RSDSS) was established, and partners with the California Department of Education (CDE), the Comprehensive Assistance Center, and county offices of education to form the Statewide System of School Support (S4) and satisfy the requirements of NCLB. The RSDSS of Region 4 provides leadership, resources, and technical assistance to the schools, districts, and county offices of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Solano in order to increase their collective capacity to support students in meeting or exceeding the state's academic content standards.
