Event description

Description

In this class, beginners will bring a widget from their imagination to reality. Learn to use the software SketchUp to create a CAD model of your desired widget (from custom jewelry, to tabletop RPG pieces, to a late Valentine's gift for your sweetheart - we don't judge). The first 45 minutes begin with the basics of CAD modeling. Learn the essentials of navigating SketchUp and the terminology of the program.

  • Introduction: Welcome Screen, Templates, Toolbars
  • Drawing in 2D: Line, Rectangle, Circle, Polygon, Arc, Freehand
  • Measuring & Precision: Learn the essentials of drawing in your default units, using the Offset and Push/pull tools.
  • Groups and Section: Learn why we create groups in the model and how to select objects and geometry.
  • Move, Rotate, Copy: Simple exercises that showcase these powerful tools.
  • Don't Reinvent the Wheel: Starting with 3D Warehouse models

The next 15 minutes are an overview of two provided 3D printers - an SLA resin printer from Form Labs and an FDM printer from Prusa. Tips and techniques for printing using each style of printer will be discussed.

The final 30 minutes are Q&A and guided help as you work on your own idea.

When the class is complete, print your widget! The two 3D printers will remain on-site, with the instructors monitoring the prints of your completed CAD model and available for more detailed questions as needed. Take home your widget by the end of the day!

Know before you go
Participants should bring their own laptop, power cord, and mouse. You can have any color you like as long as it's black. (Well... whatever resin and filament we have on hand.)

Software

Participants may choose to install SketchUp Free before class. https://www.sketchup.com/products/sketchup-free
