CACCC is celebrating the 12th Anniversary with educational series and fundraising events, featuring renowned neurosurgeon and palliative care physician Sheng-Jean Huang, MD, Superintendent of Taipei City Hospital, Taiwan.

Upon completion of this forum, participants will have discussed:

• Describe and compare the advances in the delivery of palliative care and hospice care in Taiwan.

• Understand system-level challenges to advance care planning

• Identify the hierarchy within Chinese families regarding decision-making process

• Evaluate quality vs. quantity of life of end-stage patients to effectively address challenging end-of-life conversations

• Recognize the unique challenges of a family member

• Recognize the value of a hospice & palliative care volunteer

• Access and utilize culturally appropriate communications tools and resources.


This course is designed to enhance knowledge of physicians, nurses, case managers and social workers in subjects of end-of-life care trends, advance care planning, palliative and hospice care, culturally appropriate communications tools and resources.

Panel of Experts

East Meets West: Choices in End of Life Caring features renowned neurosurgeon, palliative care physician and author, Sheng-Jean Huang, MD, Superintendent of Taipei City Hospital, Taiwan. Dr. Huang will share insights on how end-of-life care and hospice care trend is practiced and delivered in Taiwan from the hospital setting to the community setting.

Paul Chu, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Allied Pacific IPA, will share insights of system-level challenges to advance care planning.

Jonathan Leung, MD, FCCP, HMDC, Medical Director, Citrus Valley Hospice, will share hospice eligibility and enrollment guidelines, and strategies to introduce hospice sensitively with Chinese Americans.

Masako Koko Huang, will share her personal journey and challenges as a family caregiver.

Sandy Chen Stokes, RN, PHN, MSN, CACCC founder/board chair, will share insights, tools and available resources to facilitate better communication regarding providing care and discussing end-of-life issues with Chinese patients. One effective tool is the use of Heart to Heart® cards, a deck of playing cards to facilitate conversations between family members and patients, and in some cases, physician and patient.

Jenny Lu, M.S.W., LCSW, Clinical Social Worker of City of Hope, will share the challenges in referring cancer patients to palliative and/or hospice care and providing support to them and their families. 

Regina Wang, M Div., MPA, CACCC board member, will share the Chinese family hierarchy and insights as a chaplain the challenges and barriers patients and families face at the end of life in a hospice setting.

Catherine Lan, CACCC board member, will share insights on the challenges and barriers healthcare professionals, patients and families face during difficult conversations and describe the role and the importance of a volunteer.

The ticket must be presented, but a paper copy or electronic format (e.g. on your smart phone or tablet) are both acceptable.

What is the refund policy?

All events are free of charge, aside from the Fundraising Dinner, which requires a non-refundable $200 fee.

The Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care, the only coalition in the nation devoted to end-of-life concerns in the Chinese community, is an active working coalition of over 1,300 individual members.

CACCC's members represent more than 80 organizations. Some of these organizations work directly with the CACCC to improve end of life care services and resources for Chinese Americans.

We believe that sharing expertise and resources through partnerships is essential to providing exceptional end of life care that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals and families.
