Event's details:

Trends in Asian Politics: Mediated Populism, Electoralism, and Authoritarianism?’

This talk examines recent developments in the region, including the rise of Duterte in the Philippines, the recent electoral upset in Malaysia, Cambodia's controversial banning of the political opposition, and recent elections in both Indonesia and Thailand. Professor McCargo discusses the interplay between political protests, election campaigns and media events in an era of social media when the rules of the political game are being torn up and rewritten around the globe. These Asian developments have parallels and counterpoint in the United States and across much of Europe.

Speaker's bio:

Duncan McCargo has been visiting professor of political science at Columbia University since 2015. His books include Contemporary Japan (2013), The Thaksinization of Thailand (co-authored, 2005) and Tearing Apart the Land: Islam and Legitimacy in Southern Thailand (2008). McCargo will soon take up a new position as Director of the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies in Copenhagen, but will retain an active affiliation with the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia.
