Event description

Description

After four years of drought, parts of California and Nevada saw record rainfall events, record snowpacks, and record runoff events. This conference will examine what it takes to prepare and manage for extremely low water availability as well as excessive runoff from the perspective of municipal infrastructure, agriculture and production, and riparian habitat maintenance and restoration. This year's conference will be held the Renaissance in Downtown Reno, which is perched on the banks of the Truckee River and provides a perfect backdrop for the topics we plan to cover.

Field Tour (10/19): Join us on a chartered bus for a tour along the Truckee River to discuss the following topics:
- Lake Tahoe Water Release Considerations
- Southeast Connector Soil Mercury Management
- McCarran Ranch Floodplain & Channel Restoration
- Derby Dam History & Management
- Fallon Floodwater Mangement
- Desert-based Agriculture Perspectives

Networking Social (10/19): After the field tour, particpants and guests will be invited to particpate in an informal social event. Time and location TBD.

Invited Speaker Series (10/20): To set the context for extreme water conditions and how to prepare for them, the following speakers and topics will be included:
- Ken Adams (DRI) - 14,000 Year Perspective on Local Climate
- Tim Bardsley (NWS) - Recent Precipitation Records
- Dan McEvoy (DRI) - Precipitation Monitoring: Data and Visualization Tools
- Laine Christman (TMWA) - Water Conservation: Municipal Water Supply Perspective
- Bill Hauck (TMWA) - Water Supply Infrastructure Protection During Flood
- Randy Fessler (CA DWR) - Oroville Spillway Incident: Emergency Response & Recovery
- Tentative: Annie Hoagland (Sites Project) - Development of the Sites Reservoir in CA
- Sherman Swanson (UNR) - Serial Engineering vs. Functional Riparian Habitat

Student Poster Session (10/20): UPDATE: Due to lack of interest, we may remove this item from this year's conference. Our hope is to have as many posters included in this session as possible and to include a juried award for the best student poster. Details will be provided as soon as possible.

Chapter Award Ceremony (10/20): A portion of Friday has been set aside to recognize deserving individuals and groups (members and non-members alike) in California and Nevada whose accomplishments are in line with the Chapter's mission.

When should I arrive and when should I leave?

For those traveling in from out of town, we recommend arriving on Wednesday 10/18. This is to ensure that you will be able to participate in the field tour which is scheduled to start at 8:00 am on 10/19. Because the Invited Speaker Series is scheduled to take a full day on 10/19, we suggest you plan your departure no earlier than Saturday 10/20. The Chapter has blocked out 15 rooms for each night from 10/18-10/20 at the Renaissance Reno. Those with government IDs will be charged the government per diem rate of $102 per night. Non-government employees will be charged a block discount rate of $119 per night. Booking link:
