Event description

Description

The Department of Energy (DOE) is updating the Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model (C2M2). On May 22, 2018, DOE is hosting a Stakeholder Forum at DOE’s Forrestal Building in Washington, DC to announce the update and share its vision and strategic intent. The Forum will allow stakeholders to share their experience with the C2M2, provide input to DOE on how to update the model, and interact with other C2M2 users.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Energy sector stakeholders who have used the C2M2 or are considering its use in the future.

WHAT IS THE C2M2?

The C2M2 was released in 2012 as a collaboration across the energy sector. DOE developed the model in partnership with stakeholders from the electricity and oil and gas subsectors, the Departments of Homeland Security and Commerce, the National Laboratories, and other organizations. It was supported in this effort by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (SEI). This consortium assembled industry best practices, risk, and cybersecurity standards into the C2M2 used today.

Since first released, new cybersecurity standards and frameworks have been built, existing standards have improved, and technology has evolved. The safe and reliable supply of energy has increasingly become a target of nefarious actors, with more than one third of reported cyber incidents target the energy sector, with attacks increasing in sophistication. Additionally, the energy sector’s attack surface is also growing as industry increases the use of networked technologies. These challenges necessitate an update to the C2M2.
