Event description

Description

WEEKEND INTENSIVE: PRINT, PATTERN + TEXTILES
Kaitlin Trataris
4 sessions >> August 4, 5, 11, 12
11am–3pm
12–6pm, Studios 1, 2, 105, $295
No prerequisite.

This weekend intensive expands the process of silkscreen printing from paper to fabric and from flat forms to sculptures. Learn the specifics of silkscreen printing on textiles using traditional (emulsion based) and experimental (reduction and transfer) printing methods with a focus on registration, ink selection, and printing techniques on textiles. Further transform your imagery into sculptures by experimenting with the 2D image turned to 3D form. Basic sculpture principles and techniques will be covered including demos specific to methods of sculpting with fabric (sewing, stiffening, hanging). The class will culminate in a group discussion to reflect on your work and experiments!

____

Kaitlin Trataris is a multi-media artist living and working in San Francisco. She co-founded and runs R/SF projects, a curatorial project space in downtown San Francisco for raw contemporary work, alternative projects, and offbeat programming from the Bay Area’s emerging talent. Trataris is involved in a number of collaborative projects including, The Dead Alleys (a conceptual punk rock band) and A.I.R. (a traveling residency program). In her practice, Kaitlin creates silk screened and sewn fabric soft sculptures of kitchen objects and foods to transform domestic environments into explorable sites that reveal the effects of mass media consumer culture through craft mediums and forms. Trataris received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, and her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from San Diego State University. In 2015 she was a recipient of the Murphy and Cadogen Contemporary Art Award.

FAQs

What materials (if any) will I need to bring to class?
Each course requires specific materials that we ask you bring to your first class session so you can get started making right away. Materials lists are available approximately two weeks prior to the course start date. Visit the SFAI website here, click on your course title, and then click on the blue "Materials List" link underneath the course dates. If you have any questions regarding materials, please contact Public Education Staff.

What are my transport/parking options getting to San Francisco Art Institute?
All classes, unless otherwise noted, meet at 800 Chestnut Street, between Jones and Leavenworth. You can find directions to campus on the SFAI website.

SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9 pm, so evening Public Education students do not need to move their car, unless you arrive prior to 7 pm.

SFAI is easily accessible via public transportation, with Muni bus lines #30 Stockton, #45 Union, and #47 Van Ness located within a few blocks of campus.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
SFAI Public Education Staff are always happy to answer any questions you may have about the Public Education program, or our courses. We are in the office Monday-Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Call us at: 415.749.4554 or e-mail: publiceducation@sfai.edu
