Description

Background
Public harassment is on the rise in the United States. Many people express a desire to intervene when they witness public harassment, but they don’t know how to do it safely. This 90-minute course is designed to teach people skills to safely intervene when witnessing public harassment.

Participants will learn:
1. How to assess the situation to determine an appropriate way to intervene.
2. How cultural and systemic biases operate to enable different forms of discrimination
3. How each person’s identity may cross many different social and cultural boundaries
4. How harassers use stereotypes about identity to project power in the public space
5. How to support the victim of harassment during and after the event
6. Reasons why people may not intervene in public harassment
7. How to apply one of five intervention strategies, depending on the circumstances (Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay, Document)
8. How to take care of yourself after intervening (Decompress)
9. Practice techniques with multi-media case studies
